STA Lady Knights Track: What a Year! What a Finish!
(a note from Coach Crawford)
I just wanted to send out one more results email in what was without a doubt the greatest year in the history of girls’ track at St. Thomas Aquinas. Following is just a summary of what happened this year.
Out of the traditional 17 events in a track meet, we have new school records in 8 of them. Several of them were by a lot, topped by the all-time division 3 state record in the 4×800 set at the state meet Friday morning by Athena Welsh, Kacee and Kalee Soehnlen and Molly Pusateri. Other school records set this year were Taylor Looby in the 100 hurdles, the 4×200 relay of Taylor, Kacee, Kalee, and Rachael Adams, the 1600 and 3200 by Athena, the 800 by Molly, Kalee in the 400 and finally the 4×400 of Taylor, Molly, Kacee and Kalee.
We won the district and regional meets. And of course we all know we were second at the state meet by 1 point.
We were state champions in two events. The 4×800 crushed the field and Athena also won the 1600 meters. We also had 5 academic all-Ohioans who were Taylor Looby, Molly Pusateri, Megan Hoffman, Danielle Palutsis and Athena Welsh.
We won 5 out of 6 invitational meets this year and were second in the other one and were 4-1 in dual meets, losing only to a powerful St V’s team.
In our first year in the North Coast League we won that also.
We also had an unprecedented 4 girls get picked to be the Alliance Review Athlete of the week. These were Taylor, Molly, Kalee and Kacee. Athena was picked in the fall during cross country season. Taylor was also picked to be the Repository athlete of the week this year.
As proud as I am of all these victories, I just want to say I am most proud of the character, leadership and good sportsmanship shown by all of the girls as they worked like crazy to get where they were and helped their teammates to be the best they could be this year. Not every year will be like this one but it won’t be because we don’t try. This year’s team has raised the bar to a new level and we will continue to try to reach that every year. Thanks to all of the girls who worked so hard, the parents who supported us every step of the way, my coaching staff who put the girls in position to excel and everyone else who helped us along the way.
